As a prescription medication AndroGel is able to contain chemically made testosterone. Testosterone USP does not need to be metabolized by the body into testosterone compared to herbal medications which do.  AndroGel also has to be regulated by the FDA which has strict regulations. 

Disadvantages 

Because AndroGel contains prescription grade chemicals there can be several side effects. Some of the side effects include acne, headaches, and skin reactions at the application site. Serious side effects include breathing problems, vomiting, or depression.
